Trailer ABS Test Routines

The LITE-CHECK 910B trailer tester performs the following test routines to verify trailer ABS installation and operation.
Trailer ABS Testing
End of Line Test
Air Line Link Test
Trailer ABS Power Requirements
Tractor Power Output Testing
Types of ABS Systems Supported

TRAILER ABS TESTING

Standard shop operation

Connect tester 7w cable to trailer - Please note, all "Inspector" and "Certifier" trailer test systems from the 900 series of Lite-Check automatic trailer testers use the 7 way cable to directly communicate with the trailer's onboard ABS system. This feature is known as "power line communication" and is commonly referred to simply as "PLC".

AS a general rule, it is wise to confirm that the 'BRAKE' and 'ABS' circuits are functioning properly...

1.      Press 'BRAKE' circuit switch for good condition.

2.      Press 'AUX' circuit switch for good condition.

   A.     Warning light  'on' - amperage read ~0.40  (with lamp)

   B.     Warning light 'off' - amperage read ~0.12  (ECU amperage load)

3.      "One-Button ABS"

Press 'A' or 'ABS' key to read ABS
manufacturer along with system status and fault information

Click here to go to the "One-Button ABS" detail page

         A.     Will read 'PASS' if good without any faults

         B.     Will read 'NO ABS' if not detected.

         C.     Will read CODE, CODE DESCRIPTION,

            4.      Press 'C' or 'CLEAR' key to clear ABS fault codes.

END-OF-LINE

Verify proper sensor gap, sensor hook-up to the ECU, ABS valve operation, and
pneumatic plumbing connections.

Connect tester 7w cable and airlines to trailer.

1.      Raise wheels to be rotated

2.      Press 'B' or 'STORED' key

3.      Press 'AUX' key to apply power to ECU

4.      Press 'EMER' key to release spring brakes

5.      Rotate 'one' wheel at ? revolution per second

6.      Press 'Brake' on remote at wheel site to apply service air

         A.     Brake of rotating wheel should activate

         B.     If slack adjuster of another wheel moves

1.      Sensor leads are reversed

2.      Air line is not plumbed correctly

                    C.     If slack adjuster does not move, check sensor gap

7.  Repeat process for other wheel

AIR LINE LEAK TEST

Check for airline leaks effecting ABS operation

            Connect tester airlines to trailer

1.      Press 'EMER' key to release spring brakes

2.      Press 'SERVICE' to apply brakes

3.      Press 'TEST' to block air source

4.      Observe air gauges for movement

A.     One gauge shows air loss – atmospheric leak

B.     Emergency gauge drops and Service gauge raises – internal leak

TRAILER ABS POWER REQUIREMENTS

Determine total trailer running electrical load with all circuits powered.

Connect tester 7w cable to trailer

1.      Press 'B' or 'STORED' key (allows more than one circuit to power)

2.      Press the following circuit keys in order:

         'MARKER

         'LEFT'

         'TAIL'

         'RIGHT'

         'BRAKE'

         'AUX'

3.      Tester display will show all circuits on and the Voltage with Amperage.

4.      Press 'B' or 'STORED' key to cancel operation

TRACTOR POWER OUTPUT TESTING (TMC RP 137)

Determine tractor voltage output,

Connect tester 7w cable to tractor,

1.      Press 'TRACTOR' key on tester panel

2.      Operate tractor controls to observe tractor voltage output on
    tester display

A.     Tractor Auxiliary power will be display with tractor voltage

B.     Press Brake pedal to observe brake indicator lamp on tester

1.      Verify correct wiring

2.      Verify brake switch is operating

3.      Verify brake circuit voltage exceeds 12.00 volts

C.  Operate other tractor switches to verify output and voltage

Note: In addition to the above tests, the LITE-CHECK CERTIFIER 912 includes an integrated PLC J1708 adapter to provide enhanced ABS communication and configuration functionality.
